BY NINE THE NEXT MORNING Cat was still holed away in the bedroom of her suite. Jesse had let himself in with the extra key he had and was waiting in the sitting area. Their clothes had been returned from the cleaners as he’d ordered. He’d pulled on a pair of bikini underwear from the SterlingWear collection, dressed and called his office for an update. There was nothing new to report. Then Cat’s suitcases and her cameras were brought down from her old room, followed by a breakfast tray.

Jesse finally knocked on her bedroom door. “Your clothes are here. And breakfast has arrived.”

The door opened enough for him to hand the clothes to Cat. “I’ll be there in a minute,” she said, and took her duffel bag. Moments later, Cat left the bedroom, swallowed a cup of coffee and munched down a sweet roll. She was carrying a small camera as she opened the door and stepped out into the hall. “If you’re coming with me, let’s go,” she called over her shoulder.

That was the extent of their conversation as she headed for the nearest photographic supply shop where she bought a new camera bag and film. From there she worked her way on foot to the construction site where a coffee truck was waiting. She handed the driver what looked like a few bills and he opened for business.

“How’d you manage the breakfast truck?” Jesse asked her, standing away from the food wagon and agonizing over the open target she was making of herself.

“A little charm and a bribe,” she answered, and headed toward the building.

The construction site she’d chosen was swarming with men of every description. But it wasn’t the coffee truck Cat had hired that attached them like flies to honey, it was Cat. She was wearing a new pair of jeans, running shoes and a simple cotton blouse. They didn’t conceal the body beneath.

When Cat McCade said she knew how to satisfy a man, Jesse had thought she was referring to sex. It turned out that, with Cat, doughnuts and a smile were just as potent. She had a way to make a man feel important.

Eventually, Jesse realized that it wasn’t an act. Her easy camaraderie with the workers resulted in their standing in line to remove their shirts for her Polaroid camera shots. Once the photos developed, the men were more than willing to write their names and phone numbers on the backs. Good for her, unfortunate for him. The crowd of workers around Cat was creating a wall between him and his assignment.

He slid behind the coffee truck and came out closer to where she was working, biting back a smile when she shot the overweight and the pimply-faced with as much enthusiasm as the others. They would never be in a catalog, but for that moment they were being ogled by a woman who might never have given them a second glance otherwise.

Then one of the workers noticed Jesse and whispered to another. Soon, the men on the fringes began to fade away.
